Artemis: guarding small children and, now, the genome.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Through careful analysis of young patients exhibiting radiosensitivity and inherited SCID of B and T lymphocytes, Despina Moshous and colleagues discovered a new DNA repair gene two years ago and named it after the Greek goddess Artemis, a guardian of young children and small animals (1). The same group has recently analyzed several patients with hypomorphic Artemis mutations, and their results, published in this issue of the JCI (2), along with a recent report by the group of Fred Alt (3), have proven Artemis to be a guardian of the genome as well. To appreciate the significance of this finding, it is necessary first to review what is known about how our large repertoire of antigen receptors is generated.

Viewing and Annotating Sequence Data with Artemis
Artemis is a widely used software tool for annotating and viewing sequence data. No database is required to use Artemis. Instead, individual sequence data files can be analysed with little or no formatting, making it particularly suited to the study of small genomes and chromosomes, and straightforward for a novice user to get started. Since its release in 1999, Artemis has been used to annotat...
متن کاملArtemis and ACT: viewing, annotating and comparing sequences stored in a relational database
MOTIVATION Artemis and Artemis Comparison Tool (ACT) have become mainstream tools for viewing and annotating sequence data, particularly for microbial genomes. Since its first release, Artemis has been continuously developed and supported with additional functionality for editing and analysing sequences based on feedback from an active user community of laboratory biologists and professional an...
متن کاملArtemis: sequence visualization and annotation
SUMMARY Artemis is a DNA sequence visualization and annotation tool that allows the results of any analysis or sets of analyses to be viewed in the context of the sequence and its six-frame translation. Artemis is especially useful in analysing the compact genomes of bacteria, archaea and lower eukaryotes, and will cope with sequences of any size from small genes to whole genomes. It is impleme...
متن کاملMicroRNAs as Immune Regulators of Inflammation in Children with Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a chronic clinical syndrome of brain function which is caused by abnormal discharge of neurons. MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs which act post transcriptionally to regulate negatively protein levels. They affect neuroinflammatory signaling, glial and neuronal structure and function, neurogenesis, cell death, and other processes linked to epileptogenesis. The aim of this ...
متن کاملHaemotropic Mycoplasmas (Haemoplasmas): A Review
Haemoplasmas contain Eperythrozoon and Haemobartonella species, which are widespread causes of animal and human infections. These obligatory cell parasites were previously known as Hemobartonella; now hemotropic mycoplasmas. These bacteria are identified by the lack of cell wall and their small genome. The usual diameter is between 0.3 and1μm. Mycoplasmasarepolymorphi...
